Review: Jusant

A couple months have gone by since I had the opportunity to preview Jusant, the latest release from developer Don’t Nod. The demo wasn’t a complete homerun, particularly when it came to the more straightforward elements of its storytelling, but I left the experience heavily enticed by the game’s beat-by-beat climbing gameplay and unique atmosphere.

Jusant was a game that immediately and intensely caught my eye upon its announcement at the Xbox Games Showcase this year. The title’s visual style was undeniably a huge part of that initial eye catch, but its premise was what intrigued me most: traversing a towering monolith of stone and unearthing the stories of the

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has read more than a few of my reviews to know that I like games in the general metroidvania sub-category. That having been said, they are also still a genre I tend to be critical of; just like any other sort of game, it’s possible to

Preview: Frontier Hunter: Erza’s Wheel of Fortune

I forget exactly when it was I stumbled across Tower Hunter: Erza’s Trial on Steam long ago, but it was at least at a point when the odds of getting new metroidvania titles seemed… not great. So it was a while ago, and it definitely predates my working here. The game launched into early access,

Review: Unsighted

I’m going to die. I don’t care about that. I care about what it means. It happens. I consider myself decent at video games, and I rarely get particularly angry with games. It’s part of my job. Sure, it might be a bit annoying to get stunlocked and killed, but there’s no reason to get

Preview: Book of Travels

The moment it launched its Kickstarter campaign in October of 2019, Book of Travels built itself up to be a different kind of online game. Developer Might and Delight labeled it not as an MMORPG, but a TMORPG (that’s Tiny Multiplayer Online RPG) which places players in a large world with no immediate objective apart

An interesting aspect of games that emphasize survival as a core gameplay mechanic is that… well, most of them usually aren’t really about survival in a sense so much as colonizing. Sure, in games like Minecraft or Terraria or the like – or multiplayer survival boxes like Conan Exiles or Fallout 76 – you start

Review: In Other Waters

Now is a time where all of us are concerned about the health and safety of ourselves and our planet. The impact we have on our planet is a profound one and it can make us wonder whether we should travel the stars. What would we do to those planets? Do we deserve to populate

PAX West 2019 Hands-on: Journey to the Savage Planet

It seems to be a trend recently in games to tell serious, “deep,” or dark stories. Something to try and grip your attention, affect your emotions, or just…you know, be violent and aggressive. I’m not complaining, I’m a sucker for games with melancholic tones. If a video game can create feeling in my cold dead

PAX West 2019 Hands-on: Haven

On a quick stroll through this year's Indie Megabooth (although quick isn't the best term for it - the booth is notorious for crowds due to its size), I noticed there was one theme surprisingly prevalent in many of this year's selections: romance. Whether at the forefront or as a major backing element, love and romance seemed to be the name of the game for many indie titles presenting at this year's PAX.
