Review: Utawarerumono: ZAN

I’ve played many games that suffer from an identity crisis, but I can still usually feel what they’re going for. It is rare that I get my hands on a game with truly baffling design, but that is what I have here with Utawarerumono: ZAN. This is a game so at odds with itself I’m not sure who it is really for outside of its existing fans. While it’s not all bad, I don’t have many good things to say.

Review: Catherine: Full Body

The original Catherine made waves when it came out with its unflinching approach to confronting the uncomfortable issues surrounding love and lust. Sure, there were plenty of games where sex happened, or where romance played a key role in the plot, but very few dealt with the consequences sex has, or dealt with the more stressful parts of maintaining a relationship. It asked the players themselves about how they felt concerning relationships.

Review: Whipseey and the Lost Atlas

These days, modern day and retro-styled platformers have seen quite a bit of a comeback. In between modern remakes and reimaginings of established franchises, indie titles that have made a serious impression on me (looking at you Cuphead), and new titles that feel comfortable in their own skin, I was feeling pretty good about the direction this genre is going.

Hardware Review: GoCube

We are well into the age where everything is becoming internet-connected and "smart," whether it makes sense or not. We have room lights that can be controlled by voice and shift colors based on mood. Refrigerators that can keep track of what's inside them and reorder food automatically. Ovens that can be controlled from your smartphone.

Review: Control

Remedy Entertainment’s take on “New Weird” has arrived with Control, a supernatural, Metroidvania-inspired title. Control launches tomorrow on August 27th and is available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. We reviewed the PlayStation 4 version and played it on base PlayStation 4 hardware. Welcome to the Federal Bureau of Control As protagonist Jesse

Hardware Review: EwinRacing Champion Gaming Chair

When you're going about putting together a gaming PC setup, what are the first things on your mind to purchase? Do you plan to put all your money toward super high-end components, maybe two or three fancy 4K monitors? Perhaps you're the kind of person that maxes out their credit cards on RGB lighting to get the flashiest battlestation around?

Review: Gravity Ghost Deluxe Edition

Video games are a quickly evolving medium. Something that was new or fresh just a couple of years ago can feel stale and worn out today. Developers are often looking for the "next big thing" to pile on to, and that mentality can bring both positives and negatives.

Review: Metal Wolf Chaos XD

From the Archives What is there to say about Metal Wolf Chaos XD? It has achieved a level of cult status rarely seen in video games. Even I had heard of it, and I’m not a huge fan of either Japanese games or mech combat. As I started downloading the game I began to wonder

Hardware Review: Nanoleaf Rhythm & Nanoleaf Canvas

I do my best to keep up with the latest technology (when I can afford it), and one of the more recent bits of tech that I've been wanting to invest in is smart lights. Oh, how I long to be able to just walk into my apartment and have all the necessary lights turn on automatically, controlling the rest with my voice, maybe even changing hues depending on the time of day or my mood.

Review: London Detective Mysteria

When designing a character, an author can only hope that their creation will be one to stand the test of time. A character that readers decades from now, maybe even centuries, will still be able to enjoy and relate to in a way. A character that even those who haven't read the works they were created for can still recognize.

Hardware Review: EON Super 64 HDMI Adapter for Nintendo 64

Buffing A Classic Console While it may not be Nintendo’s most successful console, I have a special place in my heart for the Nintendo 64, their first console with native 3D support (Though there were a few games on the SNES with 3D provided by a special chip in the game cartridges themselves). From Super

Hardware Review: Turtle Beach Recon Spark

For being someone with a pretty deep background in music, it's kind of odd that I've never really thought twice about the kind of headphones I use with my various consoles or devices. I've often been the kind of person that'll drop hundreds of dollars on some new electronic thing, but pair it with some cheapo $10 earbuds from the local drugstore.

Review: The Blackout Club

Boxcar Goonies We are experiencing a renaissance in modern pop culture of our favorite movies of the 1980s. The success of shows like Stranger Things and the film adaptation of Ready Player One have shown nostalgia is a strong emotion that is somehow affecting a generation who weren’t even alive to see it. The Blackout

Review: Professor Lupo and his Horrible Pets

When creating a game, there's a massive amount of aspects that a developer has to design. One that some of us on the gamer side may not thing much work goes in to is a game's control scheme. "Oh, you just map certain actions to buttons, easy as that, right?"

Review: Senran Kagura: Peach Ball

What we have here is something kind of special, and there's a story behind it (and in it!). I was browsing video games on Amazon, as I often do, when I stumbled upon something I thought was very odd: What appeared to be a pinball-type game with a Mature rating. "How could you make a Mature pinball game?" I asked myself.

Review: Dragon Quest Builders 2

A few years back, there was a little crafting game that caught me by surprise: Dragon Quest Builders. As I have mentioned before, I initially thought the game was a late-to-the-party cash grab on the crafting genre when demoing it, but it turned out to be much more than I had anticipated when diving into the full game.

Review: SolSeraph

I grew up back during the times of the Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64, and it's an era that I have much nostalgia for...despite never owning either system. Before I turned 13 or so, my parents did not allow any video games in our home ("They aren't educational."), so I got most of my gaming memories from time spent at friend's houses.

Review: My Friend Pedro

We have bullet time, we have guns and explosives, we have fruit! You know what that means: it's time to strap on your gimp mask and reconnect with your imaginary friend from childhood, because there are criminals to take down.

Review: Judgment (PS4)

When something makes money, making more titles available to their audience only makes sense. Since Sega has been remaking and adding new entries to Kazuma Kiryu's story for modern consoles, players (including myself) were happy to see his gritty journey from low-ranking yakuza to makeshift father figure come to fruition midway through 2018.
