Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail Hands-on with Two-Channel Dyes

6 Jun 2024

Last year at the 2023 North American Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Las Vegas, we were told about a new addition coming to the dye system that had everyone cheering: a second dye channel. During the Dawntrail Media Tour, we were able to get hands-on with the new dye interface!

You can also find more coverage of the Dawntrail Media Tour here.

This article is based on play of an in-development build of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, and content in the final version is subject to change.

The setup of the menu isn’t too far off from what we have already have, with the obvious difference of two dye buttons. There are several ways to choose your dyes. You can pick one of the two dye buttons at the top and manually select your color via the usual menu. Additionally, below the normal dye list, we have some new options! The first row of dyes you can set is a favorites option. Every time you open the menu, your favorite pair of colors will be there waiting for you and you can quickly apply them with the button on the left of your favs. The second row of dyes is the pair that you used most recently and can be applied the same way. To the left of these two saved preferences, there are also an undo and a redo button, as well as a button to swap the channels of your selected dyes.

Unfortunately we didn’t notice any new colors, and there weren’t any dyes provided to play around with on the actual character models, but we were able to take a quick look at all the jobs via the preview window.

(The following images are not actual menus and are organized this way for presentation’s sake. In most cases, colors were chosen for visibility.)

As you can see, certain parts of equipment still won’t be dyeable, and in some cases, the parts that can’t be changed might clash with your preferred colors. Even so, we think the addition of another dye is an amazing change, and we can’t wait to see what else they have in store for us!
