Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail Benchmark Contains April Fool's Day Secret

14 Apr 2024

The Benchmark is here for Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, Square Enix’s soon to be released expansion for their critically acclaimed MMO.

With the system requirements for Final Fantasy XIV being changed with the release of Dawntrail, now is a better time than ever before for players to checkout a Benchmark for the game so they can get a good idea on if they’ll need to update their systems before traveling to the New World.

While many players have been busy creating their female Hrothgar characters, or seeing how their Viera and Lalafell look after the graphical updates coming to FFXIV 7.0, some have been testing their systems’ handling of the areas of Tural with a different character at the forefront.

Twitter/X user @kiritannplum discovered that setting a computer’s clock to April 1 will unlock a fun little Easter egg. By setting the clock back, the benchmark will end up staring everyone’s favorite inspector: Hildibrand Helidor Maximilian Manderville!

Additionally, another Twitter/X user, @magitekwitch, claims that when running the Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail Benchmark on their system, they ended up seeing Brandihild instead!

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to replicate the appearance of Brandihild. However, the current theory going around is that it’s likely dependent on the type of system the Benchmark is being run on- and that lower end systems might show a more…blocky inspector.

Edit: Thanks to FFXIV content creator Mr. Happy, we’ve learned that the trick to getting Brandihild to show up is that, in addition to setting the date to April 1, your system clock should also be set to 14:00!

For those looking to see Hildibrand or Brandihild utilizing the new Viper job crystal, or to see just how hard they can push Final Fantasy XIV with its new graphical updates, the benchmark can be downloaded here.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail releases in a few months on July 2, with an early access period for those that pre-order beginning on June 28. It will be available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and is available to pre-order now.
