A New Generation: Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Announced
Hot off the heels of Pokémon Legends: Arceus‘s rousing success, The Pokémon Company announced the next generation of mainline titles in their Pokémon Day presentation yesterday.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will be the first in the series to harbor a completely seamless open world and roaming Pokémon. While Pokémon Sword and Shield only had the Wild Areas, the company noted in particular that “various towns blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders,” calling this a “new evolutionary step” in the series.
The new region appears to be inspired by the Iberian Peninsula, with some buildings in the debut trailer featuring elements of Spanish architecture. New trainer designs were shown off as well, with the playable characters sporting different outfits in each version of the game.

This generation’s new trio of starters was also shown off, featuring the Grass-type Sprigatito, Fire-type Fuecoco, and Water-type Quaxly. Information about the number of Pokémon present—a big topic of consensus leading up to Sword and Shield‘s release—wasn’t shared. Pokémon from various generations were shown in the trailer and both games will be compatible with Pokémon HOME.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will release worldwide on the Nintendo Switch later this year.
