As we approach the 20th anniversary of Square Enix’s first MMO title, Final Fantasy XI, the company has launched a new website to countdown to the massive milestone.
The site will be continuously updated as we get closer to the anniversary with things like recaps of major events and announcements, special illustrations, as well as conversations between FFXI Producer Akihiko Matsui and guests.
The first of a four-part conversation with the original Producer of Final Fantasy XI, Hiromichi Tanaka, is already posted, which gives interesting behind the scenes insights such as how Hironobu Sakaguchi played a lot of Everquest during his time at Square’s offices in Hawaii, or how the higher-ups didn’t want the game to be a numbered entry in the series. The second part of this interview is set to go live on July 14 and I honestly can’t wait to hear more.
Previously, it was stated that Final Fantasy XI’s operation would continue at least to its 20th anniversary. Since then however, Producer Matsui has told Famitsu that as long as there are players, they will be able to continue.
