Eden’s Gate: Descent is the second encounter of the first 8-man, normal raid content released with Patch 5.01 of Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. It’s available at level 80 by finishing the Main Scenario Quest Shadowbringers and unlocked by the quest One Fell Swoop. It can be completed via the duty finder with a minimum ilvl of 425 and rewards tokens of Early Antiquity for each gear type, which can be turned in to Yahl Yal at (10.1-11.5) in The Canopy, Eulmore. Ghul Gul at (26.6-16.4) in Mord Souq, Ahm Araeng will also exchange tokens of Early Antiquity for gear.

For the sake of your fellow players, please remember that this is new content (at the time of this publication). A little friendly explanation can go a long way. Similarly, don’t be afraid to take advice. You may learn something you didn’t know.

Voidwalker

Phase 1

There isn’t much here to support a clear phase break-down in this encounter, but there is a section at the end that repeats. You can fall off this platform.

  • Doomvoid Guillotine – Voidwalker will create a long, linear AoE that projects from it’s front and back. Once it goes off, a row of 7 Nyx mobs will appear, every other one flying outward in opposite directions toward the sides of the arena. Standing in their paths does minor damage and will apply stacks of infirmity.
  • Doomvoid Slicer – The platform will be covered in a large donut AoE except for a circle under the boss. Nyx mobs will fly directly toward the boss from its front, back, left and right.
  • Shadowflame – A tank buster style attack that hits both the player with the most hate and with the second most hate; hopefully the off tank.
  • Dark Fire III – Four players will be marked with travelling AoE circles and must spread out.
  • Unholy Darkness – A stack mechanic.
  • Spell-in-Waiting – Applies a buff to the boss that makes all spells it casts a “Spell-in-Waiting.” This mean that it doesn’t go off when it looks like it should, instead starting a count down of additional time from that presumed point of ending. At 5 seconds, a large count down marker over your head will start ticking out your remaining time.
  • Dark Fire III – Spell-in-Waiting applied. Wait the extra time!
  • Spell-in-Waiting/Unholy Darkness
  • Spell-in-Waiting/Dark Fire III – Only 3 players. It goes off in-sync with:
  • Spell-in-Waiting/Unholy Darkness
  • Entropy – Arena-wide, unavoidable AoE.
  • The Hand of Erebos will appear on one side the arena.
  • Empty Hate – The ground will be covered in arrow indicators pointing away from The Hand of Erebos. Stand on the side of the platform next to the hand to avoid being knocked off.
  • Doomvoid Guillotine
  • The Hand of Erebos
  • Empty Hate
  • Doomvoid Slicer
  • Shadowflame
  • Entropy
  • Punishing Ray – Five small puddles will appear that require a single player to stand in each of them. Standing in the puddle applies a minor bleed debuff, but if any of the puddles don’t have a player in them when the mechanic finishes (a ring drops down around the puddle) they will deal damage and apply stacks of Diabolic Curse (increased damage taken).
  • Spell-in-Waiting/Unholy Darkness
  • Spell-in-Waiting/Dark Fire III – Don’t be fooled by the Fire markers on you. Wait until the Spell-in-Waiting/Unholy Darkness combo finishes before running out to place your Fire AoEs. You’ll have ~5 seconds.
  • The Hand of Erebos
  • Empty Hate
  • Punishing Ray – Don’t be tempted to stand in the puddles until after the knock-back.
  • Entropy
  • Shadoweye – Look away from the player with this debuff before it goes off or it will petrify you.
  • Spell-in-Waiting/Shadoweye
  • Doomvoid Gullotine – Dodge the Nyx as needed and get close to the boss for the next mechanic:
  • Doomvoid Slicer – Everyone should have tucked back close to the boss. If you’re the player with Shadoweye still lingering over your head, place yourself close to one side of the circle of safety under Voidwalker to give your party room to DPS and not look at you. Alternatively, you can stand completely across the arena outside of the donut AoE. Dodge the Nyx after Shadoweye concludes.

Phase 2

  • Entropy*
  • Spell-in-Waiting/Unholy Darkness
  • The Hand of Erebos
  • Empty Hate
  • Punishing Ray – Empty Hate and Punishing Ray will finish before players need to stack for Spell-in-Waiting/Unholy Darkness.
  • Spell-in-Waiting/Dark Fire III – Wait for Spell-in-Waiting/Unholy Darkness to finish before running out to place Fires. You’ll have ~5 seconds.
  • Shadowflame
  • Doomvoid Gullotine
  • The Hand of Erebos
  • Empty Hate
  • Doomvoid Slicer
  • Shadoweye
  • Shadowflame
  • *Repeats from Entropy until death.

Bonus Advice: The real challenge in this fight is coordinating the extended timers on spells from the “Spell-in-Waiting” ability the boss uses. One easy trick to keep in mind, as a player with the “Dark Fire” AoE on you, is that if you have more then 5 seconds left on your extended Fire count-down, you’re safe to stack, and should. At 5 seconds, when the icon above your head starts its count-down animation, scatter.

Congratulations, you’ve completed Eden’s Gate: Descent!
