The Yakuza series seems to have become a bit of a darling for Sega in the west over the past couple of years. After a bit of a lull in localizations, the franchise has come back in force, especially after the critical acclaim that Yakuza 0 received upon its release.
Starting back on the PS2, Sega has begun remaking the original entries under the “Kiwami” moniker, the first of which our go-to Yakuza guy ECShadow reviewed last year. A remake of the second entry in the series, Yakuza Kiwami 2, was released in Japan just a few months ago, back in December 2017. Many fans of the series have been confident that we’d eventually see this game on western shores, but with the traditionally long waits for localizations of Yakuza games, most didn’t expect to see it anytime soon.
That expectation was suddenly broken today, with Sega announcing a western release of Yakuza Kiwami 2 for later this year. The game is built on the Dragon Engine created for Yakuza 6 (of which you can expect our review soon). Particularly exciting for myself is a new campaign added to this remake featuring one of my favorite characters in the franchise, Goro Majima.
Sega is also highlighting the localization work that’s going into this entry, mentioning that they’re ensuring Kiwami 2 is “the most faithful representation of the original Japanese.”
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is set for release on the west on August 28th, 2018, exclusively for the PS4. You can check out the trailer for the release below!
