Hands On With ToeJam & Earl Back In The Groove

After a successful Kickstarter, Humanature Studios announced that they had a funding partner to help the latest ToeJam & Earl game be made and to get it on consoles. That partner is Adult Swim.

While I was visiting the Adult Swim booth at PAX West, I had a chance to sit down and check out the game which was surprisingly familiar given that I had played the original back on the Sega Genesis. This isn’t a game trying to redefine the series, but instead, a take on the original with new elements scattered throughout.

One again, ToeJam and Earl have crashed on Earth, and they need to explore each level, searching for pieces of their spaceship so they can get back home. You’ll search the area as you explore, shaking town trees and bushes, looking for presents that will help you in your quest. Some of these presents might be food (health), or others might be a powerful boombox that, once deployed, will make all the humans nearby break out into dance. Additionally, you can find broken presents- these can be fixed by talking to the appropriate support character.

During my playthrough I walked into an elevator thinking that it would take me to the next level but instead, it smiled wide, showing that it had teeth, and it sent me plummeting down to the previous level instead. There are also new humans this time around such as “guy who is always looking at his phone” and “segway security officer”.

For those that like to play their games with other people, you’re in luck. Back in the Groove will let you play four-player co-op both online and local. You can call your friends over, explore earth, and run through the Hyperfuck Zone when the game launches sometime next year.
