Anyone remember .hack//SIGN? It was an anime that hit the States back in the early 2000’s on Adult Swim that was set in the fictitious MMORPG, “The World”, a game that was conceptually ahead of our time utilizing virtual reality (VR) headsets in place of a standard screen. While we’re still years away from VR games becoming the standard, one fan of Final Fantasy XI have made an effort to bring us a little bit closer to our world of Vana’diel through VRChat
VRChat is a free chat platform that offers users a number of social virtual realities, all of which are created by their user base, purely for the sake of communicating in an environment that’s significantly cooler than a chat window or real life. A fellow by the name of Suteru from the Asura server took it upon himself to translate a few of our favorite areas from Vana’diel into this client, and honestly, it’s pretty freaking sweet. One of the things he notes in his initial Reddit post is the shear amount of detail that’s gone into some of the zones; did you know Lower Jeuno has a ton of bells on top of it’s towers? Or that the Teleport crystals at the various Crags are over 12 feet tall?
This project just goes to show us the incredible amount of thought and detail that went into designing my favorite game. I can’t wait to see more just so I’m able to gawk at the massive world of Vana’diel.
