Spiritual Successor to Shining Force Announced for PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One

On April 7th, 2014, the company Arcade County announced the impending release of their spiritual successor to the Shining Force series, entitled Shining Empire. Funded by private backers and a Kickstarter campaign, the game received full funding the same day as the announcement.

Shining Empire was originally conceived as an MMO fan successor to Shining Force, originally going by the title Shining Force Online. Sega, the copyright holder of the Shining series, put a stop to the MMO release back in December 2013. Following this, Arcade County decided to rebuild the game as a single-player RPG.

The developers of Shining Empire tout the game as a 1,000+ hour epic, with 100 hours to just complete the main story. The size of the game’s map is said to be huge as well. According to the lead developer, R. Mulvany, “You could fit all of Skyrim and Cyrodiil (Oblivion) inside our world and still have room. It is a little ridiculous how massive it is.” Mulvany goes on to mention that it won’t just be vast tracts of empty fields, and there will be enough to do in the game to justify the size of the world.

Shining Empire is set to release later this year, with the developers aiming for an October release. The game will be available as a digital download for all platforms, and as a physical release for PC.

  1. I loved SF1 and SF2 on Genesis. I’ll be watching this one.
