Confusion Regarding Parsers and Third Party Applications For FFXIV Players

ffxivappsuspension

Today, a reddit thread sprung up that states “Square Enix is banning and/or issuing warnings for the use of FFXIV-APP.” An image was included, that has since been taken down which includes a discussion between a GM and a player regarding the parser program used by many players in the Final Fantasy XIV community.

Specifically, the GM states “Parsing is a function relegated to third-party software” and that “Use and advocation of third-party software is a serious violation”.

…or is it?

In November, community rep Hvinire made this post regarding tunneling software:

The type of software you are describing in this thread doesn’t appear to directly control anything for the FFXIV client, and as such isn’t breaking any of the rules. Similar to other programs, 3rd party software is used at your own risk, and we recommend you employ your best judgement when running software not mentioned in the user agreement.

So, if a program does not “directly control” anything within the client, it’s OK?

At the same time, you have GMs and Agents on the online support stating that all third-party tools are against the rules. Now today, we have word that at least one person has received a 72 hour suspension warning on their account because they were talking about using FFXIV-APP in game.

So which is it Square Enix?

We’ve reached out to Square Enix for comment and will update this post should we hear something.

  1. All 3rd party tools would include using Ventrilo, Mumble, Or TS too right? Even Raptr, and Steam can access and read FFXIV.. lol

  2. personally im all for the hard line issue. You dont need to parse your damage, that just opens the door to people being treated poorly due to doing less than xxxx

    1. If over 80% of the end game fights werent dps races, i’d agree with you but sadly…

    2. If you want to improve your stats, you need to know the data. It’s a numbers game, you need to know the numbers.

    3. Except that this is a numbers game, and in order to improve your performance you need to know what these numbers ARE.

Titan’s heart for example is pure, 100% DPS race. If you don’t have the numbers, it’s not going to die and you aren’t going to kill him. There’s no pulling off tricks with cooldowns or even Limit Breaks. If your DPS is too low, you wipe. Period.

Your point might have merit if DPS checks didn’t exist in this game; unfortunately they (and healer (HPS) checks) DO.

      1. Oh no, you wipe?? So you then need to start again and eventually feel the sense of achievement that comes with eventually beating it.

It’s not a race to finish instances, if that’s what you want go in with a party of people you already know.

  3. FFXIV-APP should NOT be allowed personally. It was an ‘OK’ tool when it was parser only.. now program injects into client reading all sorts of stuff that isn’t available in game.

End game became much easier because you can now expect what and when boss is casting specific skills.

What? Yoshi/Team said it was legal?… really =/ since then what kinda of plugin released in ffxiv-app?

    1. I made a response below regarding this. Nothing is injected by the application. Ever. We have respected SE’s wishes to not allow directx hooks or commands to be sent to the game.

  4. “The type of software you are describing in this thread doesn’t appear to directly control anything for the FFXIV client, and as such isn’t breaking any of the rules. 1.) This quote wasn’t regarding parsers, it was regarding the use of VPNs.
2.)Article 2.5 of their TOS states that:

    Section 2.5
2.5 Data Mining. You may not intercept, mine or otherwise collect information from the Game using unauthorized third party software.
    http://support.na.square-enix.com/ru…1&tag=users_en

3.) They never said using parsers were “Okay” to begin with and there is a grey area regarding it. Using third party tools to grief other players counts as harrasment in their TOS though.

4.) Don’t bring up steam/Raptr/Ventrilo as they might “read” the client itself but they make no changes to it, nor can players use them to harass others, and ventrilo is a communication tool, as is raidcall/mumble/TS etc.

    1. That’s okay :) We had posted publicly that we had the okay from our contact at SE and none of my discussions with the Japan development centre or other meetings lead me to believe this would happen. We have made our contact to SE and will update once a response has been received.

      1. You don’t need to consult any lawyers. I can tell you with 100% certainty that any and all reverse-engineering is legal in the United States of America. The only possible contention point is that perhaps Square could choose to sue you if you went to Japan.

        1. However, because you agreed to the terms of service upon creating an account to play FFXIV, Square has every right to take legal action regardless of ‘Murica, and you gave them permission to do so.

    2. They actually have said parsers were OK to use. The quote (which yes, is regarding VPNs, and it is stated as being from such a thread) was used in the absence of what I could have sworn was a quote regarding parsers that I could not locate upon the the publication of this article. Regardless, I felt the above quote regarding third party applications was still quite relevant to the issue at hand and so I used it.

“anyone can make this shit up”
You realize FFXIV-APP is a part of ZAM.com right? You realize that they have always had close ties to SE? Why would they make anything up?

Also re: SE’s rules. They’re SE’s rules to enforce. They don’t always choose to do them. See FFXI windower, see dat mine websites.

  5. wait what any parsers gather what is already gathered in the game… hmmm that old log folder that se already put out > DocumentsMy GamesFINAL FANTASY XIV – A Realm RebornFFXIV_CHR00

Pretty sure this is se fault for outputting to chat/battle logs into your documents.

  6. Honestly I just wish they’d open the flood gates and allow people to officially make addons like in WoW… Then we could be playing Tetra Master with friends, use things like Deadly Boss Mods (no need to memorize rotations an addon will prompt you), parsers, custom UIs, mark your maps and all the other fun things you can do on WoW with addons. I expect some players will criticize people for wanting / using a Deadly Boss Mods type addon but whatever don’t install it, other people like me wouldn’t mind a promt popping up saying “Hey that attack that the boss does that really sucks is coming soon be prepared”.

    1. The problem with that vs. WoW is that WoW is PC only and if they allowed addons then it would be an unfair advantage to PC players vs console players. You can’t compare apples to oranges.

  7. I dislike seeing the dps of other people, but for myself, it’d be nice. Though I want to know if something like this is allowed or not, since SE doesn’t seem too fond of the idea themselves.
I think they should create an addon SDK to prevent something like this.
