Naoki Yoshida Addresses Lightning Appearing In A Realm Reborn

LR1

Naoki Yoshida has made a post on the beta forums regarding the announcement that Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII will be appearing in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. In it, he addresses the concerns of the community and outlines various points that the team will make sure to establish to bring Lightning into the world of Eorzea.

We’ll be discussing Lightning, as well as the other forms of fanservice being included in the upcoming relaunch of Final Fantasy XIV on tomorrow’s episode of Aetheryte Radio at around 9 pm EST. We’d love to include your comments in our discussion as well so please leave some!

FFXIV: A Realm Reborn Producer and Director Yoshida here.

Thank you for all the feedback and discussion in regards to the collaboration between LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII and FFXIV: A Realm Reborn that was announced at E3 and Japan Expo. While I was reading over all the comments and writing a post, I thought that there needs to be a clear explanation and decided to create this thread.

The Japan Expo stage is a place where people that like Japanese sub-culture gather and we focused on the below attractive aspects for our presentation:

  • Lightning will be appearing in the world of FFXIV!
  • Lightning and Snow costumes can be obtained in the world of FFXIV!

As a result, I believe there are some of you who are concerned with the implications for the lore of FFXIV: ARR and the world of Eorzea and thought, “Why are you shoehorning Lightning into FFXIV?” or “Is the game just going to be filled with other with FF characters?”

This is the first time we’ve tried having a FINAL FANTASY series character make an appearance in another world in a numbered FINAL FANTASY title. After announcing this at Japan Expo, we will be having a detailed meeting with the LIGHTNING team, but the general consensus between both teams is that “it shouldn’t just be a simple appearance.”

  • Why is Lightning in the world of Eorzea?
  • Why is Lightning fighting in the world of Eorzea?
  • What’s the connection between adventurers and Lightning?
  • And what will happen to Lightning after visiting Eorzea?

The story that answers these questions is already being created and it will also be related to the Lightning saga. This is not just a Lightning clone showing up in Eorzea; it is the one and only Lightning. We are also creating a lot of character dialogue for Lightning as well as special cut scenes. We’ve established a proper story, and I hope you’re excited to see it.

Also, in regards to future collaborations with other FF series, we will be adhering to the below principles:

  • We will never introduce characters that would destroy their meaning or story
  • We will not use characters that are already dead or whose role has ended in their title

For example, “Red XIII” who appeared in FFVII.
I believe we mentioned “Red XIV” as a joke before, but Red XIII has a very rare and specific role in the world of FFVII. If he was wandering around the world of Eorzea it would destroy the image of the world of FFVII, so this can’t happen.
This is just a simple example of what we mean.

Leading up to my involvement with FFXIV, I’ve always been a fan of the FF series just like everyone else. Because of that, I want to keep the lore important and consider the storyline in its entirety, so please don’t be worried when it comes to this.

P.S.
When it comes to Minions, however, we are going to completely run with it.

  1. Love the P.S. on this… We are going to see all kinds of crazy minions

    1. Sephiroth vs. Kefka minion Pokemon Battles! First expansion: Fogs of Vieraderia! (all in good jest, I assure.)

  2. I for one won’t be playing if XIV becomes a mash up of past FF elements. I want to feel like I’m playing a new game in a new world. I’m sick of seeing XI mobs lifted into the game, and now past FF characters lifted.

A staple of FF is that it reinvents themes, characters and ideas – it has *never* lifted elements as blatantly as XIV has. Huge turn off.

    1. I don’t think final fantasy ever really reinvents themes or ideas.. sure there are new characters.. but for the most part there are always the same summons, crystals, mobs (Malboro, cactuar, etc), and etc. I’m sure you get the picture. And if you aren’t going to play a final fantasy game because it has final fantasy stuff in it.. then well.. ha..

      Your an idiot.

      1. The ideas are thing like the summons themselves, and they are always reinvented to look different. The same with monsters. Yet in XIV many mobs are lifted from XI, and now a character has been lifted from a previous game – instead of being reinvented along the same theme, like Cid always is.

If you haven’t noticed that, you’re the idiot, not me.

        1. Cid is in EVERY Final Fantasy game. So why can’t he be in 14 ARR. Its like the Biggs and Wedge characters.

          My bad I misread :)

        2. They aren’t “re-invented” to look different it’s called being re-skinned (same ole summon different look). It would look quite funny if FF was still using the same pre-drawn unanimated summons from the summons used in the first few games, no? I’m not really sure what your beef is with the enemies. Enemies in FF games have been re-used quite alot, aka- Flan, Malboro, Iron Giant, and the list goes on. It’s really no different than the summons being re-skinned. I think your real vendetta is against FFXIII lore being put into the game and Yoshi using mobs from your precious FF XI. I played FF XI as well and I think it’s great to Gigantos, pugils, snippers, and hopefully one day the Qudavs.

    2. It is a new game and a new world. Hope u played the beta before saying a thing like that…..

      1. I have~ It’s a new game and a new world, yet half the mobs are lifted from XI… and now Lightning will be lifted into it. Very disappointing and unoriginal imo.

        1. IMO seing Pugil and Crabs from XI was a big surprise . I felt nostalgic since the last time i played XI. I guess not everyone feels the same about it. And as for Lightning , It will be cool to see how the story will go as how she got into Eorzea. Its just promotion for the new FFXIII game thats all.

        2. yeah they did use the same old mobs from xi and also from 10 as well if look closely this ok to me because if they hadnt done this we have wait alot longer or have same mobs we had in 1.0 so im cool with this because give world more beast to battle but i kinda dont like the lighting thing though because i fear they will kill lure

  3. Its nice that Yoshida gave us some more expanation how the cross promotion will be handled, too bad it wont shut up the vocal minority that feels obligated to inform us how much they hate XIII every 3 hours, no matter how much sense the final explanation and sidestory will make people that are out to hate it from the get go will just try to nit pick it apart and throw some “clever” phrases they learned at tvtropes at it.

    1. True, I doubt you will see this often as most will be much harder to fit in the FFXIV universe. It’s a shame the reception has been so bad but the fan boys hate change, you can see it with the reception of ff 12 and 13 as well (I enjoyed them both and I’ve beaten every game in the series except #1; I even played with dress spheres (weird). It’s a shame people never took XIII serious, Lightning is an excellent character, one of the best in the franchise if you ask me. But just take a look around the beta forums you see all the “FFXIV will fail if it doesn’t go back to 1.23 combat” threads (trust me there is not much difference from 1.23 to present). Glad Yoshi is ignoring most of those ignorant posts.

  4. I’m pretty excited to see this happening. If they integrate it into a story or quest (which is very easy with the FFXIII storyline with time and dimension hopping) then it will be awesome, and kind of a pulling at the strings of making us want more of it (a good feeling in gaming).
It would be more difficult to bring other FF characters though into Hyadelin (sp?) since not much can time/dimension jump…

  5. Translation:
    “Quit whining you big babies.”

Thanks for the write up Yoshi P. Although it was completely unneeded, you going that extra mile respond to a hot topic, is yet another reason I love FFXIV: ARR.
